When I got my first cellphone at 8 years old, it was still considered a shock to see children with their own devices - so mature and luxurious. I envied my friends who carried sleek, strawberry and mocha Motorola Razers. My mother gave in and afforded me a cute little pink flip phone for my birthday. She warned me before I opened my gift that it wasn’t as nice as my friends’, but I tore through the packaging. My longing was over. Waiting for my reaction, my siblings crowded around me. I gasped. I hated it! It didn’t have a CAMERA! Immediately, I heard the groans at my repulsion. How could I be so ungrateful? For years, I felt the sting of my shame. But now, the judgment is alleviated. I wasn’t a brat, I was an artist!
